The Evolution of the Sustainable Nimbin Community Plan
The SNCP was launched in 2009 with a two-day workshop focused on climate change, bringing together Nimbin residents, leaders and experts. This collaborative effort resulted in the original SNCP, which outlined eight key Focus Areas to address various aspects of sustainability.
In 2011, with support from the Lismore City Council’s Economic Development Unit, the plan was revised to include a new Focus Area: Jobs and Skills. This addition highlighted the importance of economic opportunities and workforce development in achieving long-term sustainability.
A further revision in 2016 expanded the Jobs and Skills Focus Area to Economic Development, broadening its scope to support a diversified local economy. This update emphasized the connection between economic health, environmental stewardship, and social well-being.
Most recently, the SNCP added Water as a new Focus Area, launched at Sustainability Alley during the Nimbin Show. This addition addresses water conservation, quality, and equitable access, ensuring the sustainable management of Nimbin’s vital water resources.
Looking Ahead
As the SNCP continues to evolve, it remains a cornerstone of Nimbin's sustainable development. The Nimbin Community Centre proudly supports and champions this community-driven initiative.
Nimbin Neighbourhood and Information Centre (NNIC) is responsible for overseeing and maintaining the SNCP in a stewardship role. NNIC facilitated the 2024 revision and update of the SNCP, which was made possible by:
The enthusiastic participation of Nimbin community members;
Funding provided by Northern Rivers Community Foundation; and
Funding from NSW Department of Communities and Justice, which supports the community strengthening activities of NNIC.
